After Spider-Man has glued his pants to his chair, J. Jonah Jameson orders Miss Brant to bring him a new pair, but she asks Peter Parker to bring them to him to avoid facing her boss again.
Not long after J. Jonah Jameson sponsored a TV program to discredit Spider-Man again, Peter Parker and Betty Brant report that some readers are beginning to question his motives and to think he may be jealous of the hero. After Flash Thompson escaped from Doctor Doom and the Fantastic Four found the villain's hideout, Jameson blames Peter for not bringing any pictures of the event, but Betty tells him he is wonderful.
The Vulture shows up at the Daily Bugle to steal the payroll, but Spider-Man arrives and they engage in battle, creating a mess inside the building. After the fight has ended, Peter Parker joins her and she appreciates that he did not pretend to be heroic. Then they both enjoy a romantic moment sitting side-by-side on the floor, exchanging kind words.
Betty visits May Parker at the hospital and waits with Peter while his aunt is operated.
Back to New York City, Betty speaks to J. Jonah Jameson who accepts to take her back at the Daily Bugle. But she is kidnapped again almost right away by Doctor Octopus who uses her to get the attention of Spider-Man. Surprised that Spider-Man does not put up much of a fight, Doc Oc knocks him out. He unmasks him and Betty is shocked to see that Peter Parker disguised himself as Spider-Man to try to save her.
Seeing how anxious Peter is to leave the office, Betty is starting to become jealous of Liz Allan.
Peter introduces Liz Allan to his girlfriend Betty who does not hide her antipathy for her rival.
Just as Peter's aunt comes to Betty to learn what is bothering him, both ladies get captured by the Sinister Six. Surprisingly, Doctor Octopus, who is holding them hostage, acts like a gentleman but Betty is aware of the danger they are in. They are soon rescued by Spider-Man but May remains clueless as to the nature of the doctor's strange invitation.
Peter Parker tells Betty that he is not going to the first meeting of the new Spider-Man Fan Club, but at the event, she spots him there with Liz Allan. Devastated, she refuses to speak to him and goes on a date with someone else.
At the Daily Bugle, Betty introduces Peter to her new boyfriend, the reporter Ned Leeds. However, she is a bit disappointed that he is taking it so well because she expected at least a bit of jealousy from him.
Ned announces to Peter and Betty that J. Jonah Jameson is sending him to Europe for reports on disarmament.

Betty is threatened by the Enforcers who announce that the Big Man has taken over all the rackets. As they ask her the money that she owes to a loan shark, Peter Parker tries to intervene but she does not want him involved. To protect him, she leaves for Pennsylvania for a while but she comes back some time later to pick up Doctor Octopus who is released from prison. In Philadelphia, she joins her brother Bennett who says that after Octopus has broken Blackie Gaxton out of jail, he will be released from his gambling debt and pay her back. To her surprise, Peter has found her so she finally reveals her secret. When Gaxton is free, he takes Bennett and Betty hostage. Spider-Man finds them all and when Blackie fires his gun, a stray bullet hits Bennett. In her anger, Betty blames Spider-Man for her brother's death.
Betty openly expresses her jealousy for Liz Allan to Peter.
Betty gets upset when Peter declines an invitation for dinner to go to the circus.
Betty questions Peter about his regular disappearances.
Betty gets upset when she hears the Human Torch tell Peter Parker to stay away from his girlfriend. Later, as she tries to contact Peter to hear his explanation, she is unable to reach him and concludes that he might be with the other girl.
Peter finally explains to Betty that he was only trying to make Johnny Storm jealous.
Betty forgets to tell Peter that she got a letter from Ned Leeds.
Peter gets mad at Betty when he discovers that she received a letter from Ned who is still in Europe.
Betty gets mad at Peter after he encourages Jameson to test the Spider-Slayer against Spider-Man. After failed attempts to disable the machine's control panel, she heads to Peter's home to try and convince him to talk Jameson out of his plans. On the way, she coldly greets Liz Allen who also wants to talk to Peter. They both enter his home where Aunt May introduces them to Mary-Jane Watson.
Betty is still mad at Peter for putting Spider-Man in danger and accuses him of dating Liz Allan and a new girlfriend, Mary-Jane Watson.
