Doctor Strange is asked for help by a man who is constantly tormented by the same nightmare. After seeking advice from the Master, he enters the man's dreams and learns that the man is chained by his own evil. In this world, Strange is threatened by an old foe, Nightmare. Strange escapes the dimension of dreams and finds the man hypnotized by his amulet. The man reveals that he ruined people's business and that now he is ready to confess.
Sensing that the Master is in danger, Doctor Strange travels to Tibet in his spirit form and finds his rival Baron Mordo with the poisoned Master. He uses his amulet to revive the Master. Then he threatens to attack Mordo's physical body and tricks him into returning to it, ending his hypnotic control on the servant who takes care of his Master.
After a car crash, Dr. Stephen Strange, a successful but vain and egotistic surgeon, was left with injuries to the hands that no longer made it possible to operate on patients, so he went to India to seek the help of the man known as the Ancient One to heal him. Instead, the master offered him to study magic with him but the skeptical doctor refused. Forced to stay overnight by a snow storm, Dr. Strange realized that the Ancient One's own pupil Mordo was secretly attempting to kill his master with black magic by summoning Dormammu's power. Surprised by the doctor, Mordo used a spell to keep him silent on that matter. Realizing that he can otherwise speak of anything else, Stephen Strange accepted the Ancient One's offer after a few days so the master released Mordo's spell, saying that he knew about him all along. In the years that followed, Dr. Strange studied the mystic arts to prepare the battles that only a Master of Black Magic can win.
Doctor Strange helps the Fantastic Four recover the Invisible Girl who has been abducted by the Sub-Mariner.
Loki tricks Dr. Strange into stealing Thor's hammer, but when the sorcerer realizes that the evil he felt came from the God of Mischief, they both engage in a mystical combat. Strange returns the hammer to his rightful owner and seeing that Thor is coming after him, Loki stops fighting and vanishes to Asgard.
Weakened by an attack by Baron Mordo, Doctor Strange mentally calls Thor for help before falling unconscious. Dr. Blake saves his life in the operating room. When he wakes up, he expresses his gratitude and promises to repay the favor if ever Blake needs him. The opportunity rises when he helps Blake recover his cane and protects Jane Foster from Loki's attack.
Right after Doctor Strange's fight against Mordo, the Ancient One sends his disciple to Dormammu's domain to prevent him from crossing into the human world. After defeating several enemies, Strange meets a beautiful woman who warns him that Dormammu will destroy him. Undaunted, the doctor confronts Dormammu. An epic battle begins and the villain has the upper hand until the Mindless Ones try to invade his domain. Seeing that the ruler's power is not enough to repel them all, Doctor Strange helps him set up the barrier. Indebted, Dormammu agrees to release the woman he captured and to stay away from Earth. When Doctor Strange comes back to his master, the Ancient One rewards him with a new levitation cape and a more powerful amulet.
Doctor Strange answers the call of his old friend Sir Bentley, but it turns out it is a trap set by Baron Mordo. He summons Bentley's daughter Victoria who comes to his help, but she learns from Mordo that she has a talent for the mystic arts, Strange erases their encounter form her memory to protect her.
When cases of people who cannot be awakened start piling up, Doctor Strange travels once more to the Dream Dimension and rescues them from Nightmare.
Baron Mordo makes another attempt on the Ancient One's life but Doctor Strange stops him.
When a group of invaders start taking possession of the bodies of Bavarian villagers, Doctor Strange forces them to go back to their dimension.
Doctor Strange enters the Purple Dimension to bring back the two thieves who got trapped in it. Once inside, he defeats Aggamon who is forced to release all the people he has enslaved.

While in ectoplasmic form, Doctor Strange interrupts Flash Thompson who is about to engage in a fight with Pater Parker.

When the Red Ghost and his Super Apes attack the Fantastic Four on Reed Richards and Sue Storm's wedding day at Baxter Building, Doctor Strange intervenes and banishes the villains to a distant nether world. While the battle rages on, Richards uses a machine that transports all their enemies back to the recent past with no memory of what occurred. Finally, Reed and Sue are wed in front of all their family and friends.
Dr. Strange and the Ancient One are attacked in his mentor's sanctum by Baron Mordo and his disciples. Forced to flee, Strange leaves the Ancient One in the care of a Tibetan hermit and seeks the help of Sen-Yu who provides him what he needs to hide from his enemies. But Mordo locates him in Hong Kong and Strange is hunted down by smugglers and wraiths. He decides to fly back home where he will have more resources to learn how Mordo got so powerful. After getting rid of Mordo's demon who invaded his sanctum, Dr. Strange tries to use the Orb of Agamotto but a spell signals his presence to Mordo who teleports to engage in a combat. As the villain overpowers him, Strange realizes that Dormammu is the source of Mordo's power and decides to escape to another dimension where he meets a girl whose half-sister Shazana has usurped her throne. Still too exhausted to fight her, Dr. Strange manages to discover Shazana's secret and destroys her evil power source so that the legitimate ruler can regain her crown, Then he travels back to Earth and checks on his master. While the Ancient One is comatose, the hermit tells Strange about his obsession with Eternity. After escaping another attack from the wraiths and Mordo's spirit, Dr. Strange returns to his physical form and resumes his search for Eternity.
Dr. Strange travels to London to meet Sir Baskerville to ask what he knows about Eternity, but his behavior betrays that he became Mordo's ally. He knocks down the disciple Mordo has sent to defeat him and a scan of his memories proves he was right about Dormammu's involvement. After days of research around the globe, Dr. Strange finds the Old Genghis who hands him a scroll. But the scroll takes him to the world of the Demon of the Mask who captures Dr. Strange. Using the power of his cape, Strange breaks the Demon's spell and sets himself free.
Despite the hermit's fears for the Ancient One's life, Dr. Strange decides to seek into their master's comatose mind for information about Eternity. After having thwarted all his mental traps, Dr. Strange connects with his master who shares his secrets with him, enabling him to travel to Eternity's world. When he meets him, Eternity scrutinize his visitor to learn if is worthy to receive additional power. The entity finally denies him the power he seeks, for he states that he already possesses the means to defeat his enemies and must use more wisdom than power. Back in Tibet, Dr. Strange discovers that Mordo has abducted the Ancient One and follows Mordo's wraiths to his foe's sanctuary where Dormammu wakes the old man from his coma. Then a fierce combat begins and Mordo' powerful attacks get him ever closer to victory. But Strange's clever tricks anger his opponent and make him reckless, so Dormammu decides to take over. He sends Strange, Mordo and the Ancient One to a neutral dimension and challenges Dr. Strange in a physical duel where their only weapons will be the Pincers of Death. As Strange gains the advantage, Mordo decides to intervene and takes him down with a spell, which angers Dormammu who exiles him to the Dimension of Demons. Dr. Strange then convinces Dormammu to resume the fight and defeats him. The magician forces the loser to make an oath to never turn his power against Earth. Back to the Ancient One's sanctuary, Strange and his master tell Hamir the Hermit the good news. But in retaliation, Dormammu informs Strange as he exiles the Dark Dimension girl to a place he will never find her. The Ancient One promises his disciple he will get supporters to help in his quest to save her, but now it is more urgent to destroy the evil enchantments that Mordo has spread all over the world.
Back in his own retreat, Dr. Strange detects a hidden common bomb. He hurls it above the city but the blast hit him and he gets captured by Mordo's conspirators, without his amulet and cloak and with his hands and head trapped in spell-proof bonds. As Mordo's demon tries to probe his mind, Dr. Strange takes control of his and forces him to dissolve the spell that binds him. Now able take a spirit form, the blindfolded magician manages to elude Mordo's minions and finds a place to hide his body. But while he was able to regain command of his cloak, he realizes that his body has been taken by Mordo's deputy. So using his cloak and amulet, Strange cleverly manages to defeat Mordo's evil trio one by one. After he forces the deputy to release his body of its bonds, Strange erases all memories of black magic from the trio's minds.
The Ancient One guides Dr. Strange to another dimension where its ruler points the sorcerer to the outer edge of infinity where he may find the exiled girl but warns him that it may be a trap. Reaching his destination, the sorcerer is attacked by all sorts of monsters. Once they are vanquished, Dr. Strange follows a bird-like creature and meets Tazza, whom he defeats in combat. Vanquished by his opponent, Tazza declares he knows nothing about the female. Dr. Strange forces him to release the souls of his victims and promises he will come back should he be inhospitable to strangers in the future.
Soon after getting back home from his battle with Tazza, Dr. Strange detects evil magic and tracks it down to Mister Rasputin, who plans to take over the world. While his magic clearly surpasses that of the villain, Rasputin resorts to the use of a pistol and shoots his opponent. Helpless, Dr. Strange flies to a hospital to get treated. Later, in his spirit form, he locates Mr. Rasputin and defeats him with his cloak and amulet. Taking him back to his hospital room, he finds an armed thug immobilized by his amulet as he attempted to finish Rasputin's job. Dr. Strange erases Rasputin's mind of magic then forces them to confess their crimes to the police.
Lured to a Nether Dimension by Dormammu, Dr. Strange realizes that Dormammu has cast a spell binding Eternity in his subcosmos. The sorcerer breaks his hold on it and Eternity comes out of his resting place. Offended that Dormammu has dared to lock him up, Eternity decides to deal with the evildoer himself. The magician watches as they clash in a cosmic struggle at the end of which Eternity vanishes and Dormammu is crushed between colliding spheres that disintegrate in the impact. Then Dr. Strange is pulled away from this dimension and back to the Dark Dimension by the Ancient One who confirms that Dormammu was reduced to nothingness. Consequently, his spells are lifted and everyone Dormammu banished comes back, including Mordo and the girl from the Dark Dimension who tells Strange she is called Clea.
