He plots with the Frightful Four members, but is kept from attacking the captive Alicia Masters by Thundra. She proceeds to have a one-on-one fight with the Thing in a stadium, that the Wizard and the others plan to blow up, eliminating both the FF and the uncontrollable Thundra. However, Thundra knocks the Thing out of the stadium and ruins their plan.
A brilliant scientist known as the Wizard grows jealous of the Human Torch's popularity so to prove his superiority, he decides to defeat him. After capturing the hero, he goes on a crime spree disguised as the Torch to incriminate him. Then he challenges him to a fight where the winner would get photos proving that Johnny was frame but the young man refuses. As the Wizard is about to burn the evidence, Johnny declares that he has telekinetic powers and the pictures mysteriously float out of his hands. With proof of the Wizard's guilt, the man is arrested, unaware that it was the Invisible Girl who grabbed the photos.
The Wizard escapes from detention using a formula he created with chemicals he stole from the prison hospital. Then he challenges the Human Torch to publicly prove his superiority. First, the Human Torch is able to handle any weapon the Wizard throws at him. But the tides turn when the Invisible Girl shows up, falling into his trap. But the siblings manage to escape and stop the villain who is sent back to jail.
While he is elaborating new plans to destroy the Human Torch when he gets out of jail, Paste-Pot Pete arrives and breaks him out. They both agree to work together to defeat their common enemy. However harmony is broken as soon as the Wizard imposes his leadership over Pete's proposed partnership. Using the Wizard's flaming suit, they commit crimes to frame the Human Torch. The flaming hero soon confronts them and they entrap him in a hall of mirrors. But Johnny melts his way out and rounds up the two criminals. Then he clears his name by delivering them to the police.
When the Eel unknowingly activates an atomic bomb, the Wizard offers to find him if the prison warden agrees to set him free, but the request is denied. Later, he hears that the Human Torch has been injured while saving the Veterans Hospital from the blast and he gloats when he learns that the boy's chances of surviving are very low.
Thanks to anti-gravity unit he created in the prison workshop, the Wizard breaks out of jail. He captures the Human Torch and the Invisible Girl so he can live under Johnny's identity. But they manage break free by alerting the other Fantastic Four. After fleeing a battle against the Human Torch using his anti-gravity device, the Wizard gets stuck in the sky because the device gets jammed.
Still floating adrift in the sky after his last battle against the Human Torch, the Wizard had been rescued by the Sandman and Paste-Pot Pete who were flying by after breaking out of jail. Along with Madam Medusa, whom he met recently and now introduces to the other two, they form the Frightful Four to get revenge on the Fantastic Four. With his new anti-gravity device, he decides to change his name to the Wingless Wizard. They manage to surprise Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Girl and the Thing and send them adrift along with Alicia Masters, but the Human Torch captures the Wizard and forces him to rescue his friends. The Fantastic Four are about to defeat them when the Wizard's ship explodes, allowing the Frightful Four to escape.
Madam Medusa, the Trapster and the Wingless Wizard capture Sue Storm while she is at a beauty parlor. Then the Frightful Four lure the rest of the Fantastic Four and leave them stranded on the island until an atomic Q-Bomb explodes.
Spotting a flaming streak in the sky near Baxter Building, which is actually the Asgardian Balder journeying to Earth, the Frightful Four think it is the Human Torch. They realize that the Fantastic Four may have survived the explosion, so they decide to abandon their plan to take over their quarters.
Tension builds within Frightful Four, and while Madam Medusa acts like she's the team leader, the Wizard makes sure that she knows where he place is. Taking the opportunity of the Thing leaving the Fantastic Four, the Wizard successfully brainwashes him to join their group and turns him against his former teammates. With his help, they manage to capture the rest of the Fantastic Four. After Reed and Sue manage to abduct the Thing and escape, the Wizard decides to submit the Human Torch to the same treatment as the Thing but Madam Medusa realizes that he hero is only faking submission. The villains neutralize Johnny and use him as leverage to have the Fantastic Four surrender. But they soon realize that the Wizard is no longer in control of the Thing and although Madame Medusa is able to flee, her teammates are delivered to the police.
