Also... Ben and Reed's old dorm room must have seen some things.

What a crazy issue! I actually really enjoyed Uatu's tale of the Over-Mind... just the sheer scope of it across time and space. Just a lot of fun to imagine the whole thing. Plus, I loved the concept of a peace-faring race so massively large that over decades/centuries/millennia(?) they learn the art of war enough to escape their planet and turn the tables of the Eternals, using their own reaction bombs against them. Plus, the whole concept of our solar system being formed from the destruction of Gigantus was very cool.
Plus, I liked the concept of the Over-Mind effectively being the last of a dead race, drifting alone in the universe for time on end... only to emerge with "concepts of a plan" for ... what, exactly? To control/destroy the universe out of... revenge? Spite? Or will he somehow resurrect the Eternals? I don't know... But I'm along for the ride!
As for heroes not using their potential until they go evil... I just assume their "good" side keeps their power in check, sort of like Spidey pulling his punches all those years, and only when their conscience is free from self-restraint do we see the unhinged, creative ways they can use their powers... like, "I've had this idea in my head to try this forever..."
I'm excited to see who the "ally" is in the next issue... Dr. Doom, maybe? I have no idea where this story is going.

Stan mashes together Galactus' origin from Thor 169, Mangog's "billion minds in one being" and the story about the infant being launched into space before his planet exploded...what was that one called again? (@darkraven knows...) and hands it over to Archie to flesh it out, resulting in a "Tales of the Watcher in Asgard". With Big John drawing pg6, it also reminds me of Conan, by Grom, er, Crom! Holy Roger Dean! Earth was formed by a shard of Gigantus drifting through space? But how's O-M going to "crush the Universe" when he's skulking in a NYC junkyard? I guess you gotta start somewhere.
Then Sue says "I've never heard you talk this way" (pg21p4) and I thought "that last time I heard that line in FF 107 pg10, Ben went bad" and the next thing you know, Reed's being a Brute how many of you know that's a spoiler? to his teammates. Reed's evil leer on pg26p7 matches Ben's from FF 110 pg6. Is a member of the FF going to go bad every few issues now? I'm waiting for Sue's turn. At least the Over-Mind is living up to his name. But Ben says Reed could always find his ticklish spot - does he do that a lot?
You gotta feel sorry for ol' Utah though; after spending ages recording the history of the entire Galaxy, he's just dying for someone, anyone to hear him tell it. He should be renamed "the Spoiler", Just like you gotta feel for the X-Men; once they were proudly announced in the Marvel Checklist between the Avengers and Daredevil, now they're stuck in the "Of course" section with the rest of the reprints.
best line: "My Aunt Petunia is Raquel Welch!" (pg23p5) The secret is out!

I really liked the concept of Gigantus, a planet so big that it could never be invaded.

Yeah, honestly, not getting the love here. Besides this story reminding me of Mangog, and a Superman story (although that's during the John Byrne years), the idea of a conquering race or villainous group using their dying breath to create an ultimate weapon... It's trite and clichd, even at this point. I will say the art was great, and I loved seeing Reed take out the team. But yeah thought he was just being himself at first. Saying " In this group, there is only one person who has that qualification- myself" is something I'm sure he thinks on a regular basis, given how he barks orders. Either way, he could use some therapy.

Why do they just repeat mind-control stories one after another?

I was ready to give this 3 stars because the origin story was actually fun to read but hey mindcontrol at the end so 1 stars it is.

This is a little repetitive given that we just did an evil Thing, and moving straight into evil Reed. But, it's a fantastic issue nonetheless. John Romina is excellent at drawing Mr. Fantastic in all those weird formations, better than Kirby did IMHO.

The Watcher relates everything he knows, because this is somehow not interfering. The Fantastic Four realize Reed is the worst, but refuse to accept he's responsible for his actions, despite ten years of experience. I'll admit to being both surprised and somehow not surprised when Reed went off on the other three, but it didn't occur to me that The Over-Mind was responsible. Figured it was just Reed being Reed. The Watcher's story was just okay, but Reed turning on everybody earned an extra star. Four stars.
I'm also not really seeing the threat of The Over-Mind yet. His superpower is showing to The Fantastic Four that Reed is a terrible person, which we already knew. He definitely reminded me of Mangog too. Hopefully, Odin won't wake up from his nap and deal with The Over-Mind like he did with Mangog.
"Well, I was going to let you die even though I already warned you about this guy. But I guess in for a penny, in for a pound. Let's do some more oath-breaking!" Page 3 is very Kirby. The Thing is old Star Trek fan? It's been off the air for two years! The Watcher's story is pretty cool. When Reed said the other three usually hampered him, I was shocked! I've known he believed it, but didn't think he'd say it. That entire sequence was great and has me excited for next issue.

It really says something about Reed that it took them like a page and a half of him being a***before they finally went "Yup, Overmind's definitely got him!"

The concept of a planet so big it makes galaxies look small is just the kind of cosmic scale I can't wait for in Marvel comics! The rest of the Watcher's story was entertaining, with great art helping too.
I just can't bring myself to care about Over-Mind though. He's obviously not gonna "crush the universe", or Earth, or even most likely the Baxter Building. His whole gimmick is he has all the power of a super powerful race, but that just means he can do anything and should have won already. I've still got no idea what "phase 1" of his plan even was, or how faffing about in New York is helping his ultimate goal at all.
Oh, and it was cool seeing Reed actually stretching in creative ways. Like another commenter asked: why do our heroes never show their full potential until they're fighting against other heroes? 3/5.

Why does Stan keep leaving the books in the middle of a story ark, he did it with Hulk, Ironman Namor.

Page 14, panel 5: Guess Uatu's not a... weight watcher!
Get it? On account of him being the "Watcher"? And also... you know...? Is this thing on?
I'll just leave now.

You've got Stan who generally left it up to the artists to plot plotting. An artist in buscema who had no interest in plotting and a competent writer from a whole other style trying to tie it all together. Possibly with some Roy Thomas in there too. It's fine. It's quite blatantly not what was intended but it's fine

It MUST be OVERMIND that turned the city against us.
Sure. Has nothing to do with the amount of damage that Ben caused the city in his fight with the Hulk over the last three issues.

The cover makes it seem like Sue has just been waiting for Reed to go bad, all along. Which, given some of his past behaviour...fair.
I do hope he takes a few licks from the others before inevitably reverting to the good guys. Partly because that's what makes dramatic sense, but mainly because I just wanna see him get beat up.

I think The Watcher is badly named. He should be called The Interferer.
