Issue Notes
Why Essential Notes
This is the second time ever that two Marvel characters team up--Sub-Mariner and Human Torch. Their first encounter was a battle against one another. This encounter sees them fighting together to overcome an Axis invasion of the U.S.
In the grand scheme of things this story isn't necessarily all that important for continuity. But it does stand out as interesting and well done in a sea of Golden Age material that can sometimes be lackluster. It's also true that it is one of the earliest Marvel takes on WWII (an ad for Captain America #1 appears in this issue). In addition, it, like its predecessor story of the battle encounter between the two heroes, is penned and penciled by both Torch writer Carl Burgos and Namor writer Bill Everett--a collaboration effort which is an anomaly for this era of comics.
