Wolverine has to Jean Grey another person he cares about though he doesn't quite get the job done so now Peter accidentally has to live with the PTSD of that action now. So Peter flew back to New York without Ned's body or letting Jameson or anybody know?

Wolverine's plan to get Charlie killed was pretty convoluted and mean to Peter when you stop to think about it. Not very heroic of you Logan.

This is not a well-known fact, but Wolverine's primary mutation is not his healing factor or incredible senses - no, his main power is abandoning his team to go do something cool whenever he feels like it.

It's funny that Nocenti was the editor for this. I can imagine Claremont on the phone with her..."Ned who? Just make sure this guy doesn't screw over Wolverine!!"

Jim Shooter is still the EIC of this. There's no reason the editor of this one hasn't read Secret Wars. Why are we acting like those two haven't met and fought before? Spidey rocked his entire team when they fought in Secret Wars!

It was written as they had met before. That's how Wolverine recognised Peter as Spider-man through his scent

I stupidly giggled because Ned's dead rhymed.

I guess maybe it was fairly telegraphed, but I was pretty caught off guard by the Charlie gender twist. Even more so was how good a job they did at making me immediately recognize her as the woman Spidey saw before finding the Hell's Kitchen murders.
Ned's death was certainly unexpected based on certain spoilers I thought I knew (but now I'm doubting).
I liked the last page cause it adds to this recurring motif with MJ and Peter that I'm tracking where they have significant moments of being there for each other at his apartment door, starting with ASM #122.

Absolutely loved this, an easy five stars from me. Though the ending is a bit rough around the edges.
Spidey waltzing in on the dinner scene was the highlight for me.
I didn't find the inner voice/narration to be too similar between Spidey and Wolverine until the graveyard scene near the end.
I thought it was interesting to see the conflict of ideologies between the two when they were teamed up and looking for Charlie. As opposed to when Logan teams up with the X-Men and they just accept what he is and what he's capable of. Completely foreign to Spider-Man who has his own convictions.

My two favorites in a pretty compelling story. Art pulled it down for me.

- I did not understand the big deal when this came out. People were soiling themselves. I ended up finding a bunch at some small store in southern NY and selling them for $10-12 a pop within a month.
- Actually, better than I remembered

Worst summary ever:
One of the first comics I ever loved. I can distinctly remember saving up the money to add to my weekly comics budget, and remembering the regret of the nicer format issues over the last few years. This was something special. Loved it.

Spider and Wolverines internal dialogues were an identical voice. That voice kind of tracks for Logan, complete mismatch for Peter. I don't get the love for this one.

I like how Spidey interrupts Wolverine killing Charlemagne to point out how messed up his gray-on-gray world of spies and senseless killing is... and a little disappointed that the narrative comes down on Wolverine's side. I usually like Christopher Priest's writing, but this whole story feels overly cynical and a little spiteful toward Spidey.

I think the deep parts were the ones that won me over more than the finer motivations of the story. Peter's PTSD flashbacks were consequences of how his core beliefs that the world is not as dark as he thought are shattered. Having come from deployments, the images can keep coming back and intrude like that...
This book can be seen as one of the turning points from the fresh and light superheroic stories represented by Spider-Man into the darker and harsher world of anti-heroes of Wolverine. The late era Cold War setting of East Berlin brings home the point that the world we see here is on the edge of new beginnings. The Berlin Wall falls within a couple of years from this story...

Good solid issue that I believe could be updated (if it has not already been) and would make for a great issue. Over all the art and some of the shaky motivations for Charlie wanting to die at the end makes an otherwise great idea to just a good comic.
I like how Peter is effected by the violence in his town as well as when he leaves the country. Wolverine can come off as a jerk to Peter but I think their is a baseline of caring about Peters welfare deep down. It is also understandable just how annoyed Logan would be, he probably thought there was a time he could fix the problem but he too has to come to the realization that he can not fix everyones problems and can not "win" this particular fight for Charlie.
Good stuff, this it had been a little better though...

"Charlie was short for Charlemagne. A name's that got too many blasted syllables. And letters. I'm the letterer and my hand's cramping enough already."
Yeah, this was pretty messed up. I actually had to stop reading this for a bit to find out just what was up Owsley's rear when he decided to do what he did to Ned. Just to piss off Stern? Holy crap. If I'd done something like that, I'd have changed my name, too.
Still, 4 stars for a story that had a lot of balls to be told, and the way it was told. It got a lot of mileage from the amount of disparity between Wolvie's and Spidey's worlds, and that made it all the more compelling. Now, as for how this affect's the ongoing plots in the Spider-titles....

Damn, very deep and dark. Now I'm gonna Google why Owsley offed Leeds.

A decent story until you look into why Owsley killed off Ned Leeds, which then tarnishes the story a bit and reveals that Owsley is quite the jerk.

I'm glad you mentioned this or I wouldn't have looked it up. I was pretty mad about what happened in this story, because it seemed to wreck ongoing subplots. That one scene ruined an otherwise excellent story.
I couldn't find anywhere Owsley actually talked about what happened. I did find out what happened between him and DeFalco and geez he was a complete jerk him and to everyone else. Owsley stabbed a lot of people in the back during his tenure there in the 80s.
I really want to see the scenes that Owsley had cut from DeFlaco's run.
