Review of
Thor (1966) #169
Another epic Thor story draws to a close. This is when the title is at its best, in these saga-esque adventures that go above and beyond anything else in Marvel.
Unfortunately, this one ends in a bit of a dud. After several issues of Odin searching for Galactus, he's found and reveals his backstory. And it's the same backstory a half dozen other characters have.
Another utopian society faced with another unstoppable destruction in what might have well been a bad Tales of the Watcher story. The only novelty is the decision to go out in a blaze of glory instead of some sort of self-sacrifice. But it's very unsatisfying an origin story for someone like Galactus. And Odin coming in at the end after several issues of concern just to be like "oh ok nevermind" was very disappointing. I want to see those two go at it!
Still, this issue earns a 3/5 at least, despite dropping the ball. The characterization of Galactus is great, continuing a trend of him really standing out in Thor. Technically this arc ends next issue, but the Galactus connective tissue is over.
