Fantastic Four (1961) #84
8/10 - Fantastic Four's Fiesta Day in Idyllic Latveria
Great issue that perfectly combines excellent Kirby's artwork with Stan's excellent staging of Doom, nice storytelling and cool eerie vibe. I love Dr. Doom's megalomaniac, scary and condescending nature. For any other character, it would feel excessive and annoying, but it fits him like a glove. That full page 5, with Doom's sarcastic soliloquy is awesome. The poor citizens living under the facade of a fairy-tale, idyllic country, yet actually powerless and subdued to Doom's plans and whims are masterfully depicted.
The first third of the issue does a good job setting up the tone and transitioning from the previous plot to the new one. Featuring S.H.I.E.L.D with Fury and Dum Dum as means to introduce the threat and mystery, was solid and funny. The next part with its slow pacing, introducing the eerie vibe of the village and the Fantastic Four puzzled and at the mercy of Doom, is creepy and manages to keep the interest.
It's true that someone could think that Doom could have finished the Fantastic Four right away. But for me, it was credible and in line with Doom's constant need to feel a superior being and in total control.
