MARVEL-OUS OR PERHAPS MEH

I gotta say, I have been looking forward to reading this comic for QUITE a while. I can remember being about ten years old and seeing the graphic novel Death of Captain Marvel, and all these heroes. I wondered, 'œwho in the world is this Captain Marvel guy that everyone is fawning over?

At the same time, I was reading an arc of Avengers 273-280 - which I loved. I still don't remember at all why I stopped buying Avengers and stuck with only West Coast Avengers. The Masters of Evil takeover of the mansion was a stinking awesome story. I wasn't a fan of the art, but LOVED that they were losing this thing. Anyhoo - involved in THAT team was the OTHER Captain Marvel (now Pulsar). So that was my intro to what Captain Marvel was (or is'¦?) at that time. This comic seemed far away and unrealistic all at the same time.

Especially now with the Captain Marvel film under my belt (and a slight re-adjustment of much of that history) I now look at the story and think'¦ Really?

It was a bit of a let-down. Way too much anticipation for the comic. Even the colors on the uniform are a bit drab. Now - to give some credit, I really DID like that so many of the characters were introduced inside of this comic. It works well in that aspect to see all of this put out there. I also LOVE the Colan art. Anyone who has read me knows that it's one of the few redeeming qualities in this era of everything. But to read this story with SO much anticipation'¦ Really a let down. Science fiction is not where Stan succeeds. Way too silly science and bound with statements that are really out of the character of the time. That's fair - I like much of it, but not how the story is really set into the universe yet.

I always got the feeling that much of the universe tried to eliminate the character because he wasn't very popular. This may have cemented much of that for me.
