Review of
Marvel Super-Heroes (1967) #20
ALWAYS DARK. ALWAYS DOOM.
This was a pretty impressive issue. It had quite a few things that I really liked within the book. Sort of an origin story for Dr. Doom - but maybe more of what might be an origin or zero comic.
The story starts with pandering mess. Bringing 3D models to to attack Dr. Doom and re-live his battles'¦ Not entirely great. It did have the one line that I really loved - 'œforced to endure a witless teenager's attack'¦' That may have made that section. It did not last long.
Shortly thereafter, Diablo appears and shows Doom quite a few moments that connected with his history. Many little shots of what Victor was like as a kid - and seeing the darkness of his past. Both parents dead? Of course. He is a comic book character. I did like the story quite a bit. The development behind the escapade was worthwhile. I don't know that it took me off-guard, but I certainly didn;t think that the two were going to create some super-alliance between the two for the next few. Cheers to Marvel for putting Diablo on the back burner after this story. That was a worthwhile change for the story.
Liked the look back into what made Doom such a nasty man. It was told in a too-simplistic fashion, but seeing that both his parents were murdered in separate occasions made me really appreciate that he had gone through such nastiness.
Now, the Diablo writing was probably not the best. I don't think that Diablo really could have done so much to really control all of what Doom put back at him, but that is okay.
The TURN at the end was told in a pretty great fashion. The attempted double-cross that turns the other way - exactly as it should have been. Might have been better if Diablo were truly sacrificed entirely, but'¦
Then the confrontation at the end of the comic. Doom's true love brought back - and HE TURNS HIS BACK on her. Wow. That I didn't entirely see. Thought she might be condemned in some way or she was offended by him, but SHE WAS GOING TO SEE HIM. He refused to give it up. Not a bad way to end that.
4/5
