Review of
Thor (1966) #162
WELL-MEANING
It starts off well. I like the art - and especially love the superimposing of Thor and Recorder over the space scene. Creative - and probably a cool idea for the time - but much of the story seems to fall flat. Even in the story, Thor and others are really discussing how imposing Galactus would be still around, and we really need to get him.
Then, more talking ensues.
The origin story is underwhelming. I mean, this is GALACTUS we are discussing here. One of the most fascinating guys in the Marvel universe. Where the Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer interactions with Galactus were SO great, these are terrifyingly mediocre. Perhaps (probably) Galactus is sorely misplaced within the Thor comic. I really want ANYone else to be around him. Really, in these comics, I don't have any real fear that Galactus or Thor will suffer any level of impact at all - nor do I worry about Galactus.
For an insane reason, Thor then travels back to Asgard to rally up a few of his cohorts for'¦ comic relief? I dunno. It just seems so insanely out of place after hearing all about the importance of Galactus.
NOW then. Galactus destroying all of the space fleet - just because he was hungry? THAT was pretty cool. And after all of the interactions before - HERE is when the comic gets good. It's why my review is so crazy messy up and down and all around. THIS was good. THAT was not great.
Then back over to boring talking, and kookiness.
UNTIL the end when Balder is tormented. Again, great at the end but so many awful changes of pace, they are too shallow to keep up with.
These need work. I know I have a TON more of these to read, but too much discussion around the importance of it. Not enough focus on the development of the Galactus origin - which is SO great, and the rest is not tto much in a level of development or interest.
I want more from these, but I don't entirely know how in THESE books. Instead, move the characters back where they SHOULD be.
